The Journey Begins

Contemplating growing older and the big 40 steadily approaching caused me to re look at my life and my destiny. I decided that if I didn't get this fitness thing right by the time I turned 40, I never would. And so I undertook to do my first half-marathon as a sponsored run to raise funds for a charity and I did it in an orange tutu. I ran the same race again the following year in the same tutu, and have run a further 2 half-marathon's and many, many 10km races since. For me its more about crossing the finish line on my own two feet than anything else - a great sense of personal achievement! Let me add here that I have flat feet, knees that knock together and the co-ordination of a circus clown! And so one day, about 4 years ago, I read an article about someone running the Great Wall of China half marathon, and I needed to do it! And so I declared to my running group at the time - the Constantia Active Virgins - that I would be running the Great Wall of China half marathon in 2010, and who would be joining me?

2010 has arrived, and my goal is fast approaching. And so I sent of an e-mail to my former running mates (they still run religiously, while I have moved to the other side of the world and now run alone - dodging snakes and lizards) asking them: "are you in or are you out?" At the same time, I set out to make new friends in my new home - friends who are as crazy as I am. I have found many that fit that bill, but one in particular who is up to the China Challenge.

Megan and I will leave from Brisbane on 11 May to meet up with Kelly and Rene coming from Cape Town............and so my journey begins!
